Chainbiters History - by Grandaddy
After being introduced to disc golf, and quickly becoming addicted to its charms in the fall of 1998, I decided to create a simple, 9 hole course behind my house in rural Arkwright, NY. With the continuous help of family and friends, this dream was realized the following spring, and local interest grew immensely. Pro's, Amateurs, and recreational players all commented on the course's beauty and strategic land use.
Within three years, however, we had outgrown the small 9 hole course; with player fields in the 30 's and 40's, we needed a larger, more diverse course, which would equally challenge both beginner and seasoned pro.
Our old family farm of 110 acres was chosen for the new site and work began on Brown's Farm Disc Golf Course in 2002. From the beginning, this course offered challenges in design not experienced with the smaller course and I knew I would need some design tips if I wish to create a first class facility. Wishing to learn form the best, I invited recognized leaders in disc golf to stop by for a "home cooked" meal and give me some advice.
John Houck took me up on the idea as did and Juliana & Shawn. They walked the 40 acres we'd chosen for the course, with its many natural resources and all offered their opinions. I took their advice, of course, including putting in a big pond at the bottom the hill on hole number nine. Though discussion, compromise, trial and error, and ideas from hundreds of disc golfers, the course was finalized and opened in 2004.
The Brown's Farm course has far exceeded our wildest expectations, delighting disc golfers from all over the country. Since then, a core group of dedicated members and family, have continually improved and expanded Brown's Farms deep valleys and thick, challenging woods.
Never being ones to stand still, this summer, in 2010, we will again expand deeper into the roaming, deciduous hills, creating even more diverse holes for our ever-growing tournament field.
Chainbiters offers "daily - year round play" for members, "open play" for weekly leagues, monthly tournaments and special events. Camping on site.
We also host two PDGA sanctioned events each year - The Beachwood Open and The Can Am Cup.
